The Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway has been a major priority for the territorial and federal governments since the 1960s.
Upon completion, the 120 km all-weather highway will provide a land connection to the northern community of Tuktoyatuk. Currently the community is only accessible by airplane.
The design of the ITH is being engineered by EGT Northwind Ltd. under a contract with the department of transportation (DOT), while DOT staff and advisors are working with the contractor to effectively guide, review, evaluate the final design.
Approximately 71 km will be on Inuvialuit private lands which are maintained by the Inuvialuit Lands Administration. The rest of the route is located on Crown lands, which are maintained by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada. Administration of Crown Lands will be transferred to the GNWT in April 2014.
